Understanding Anxiety

Everybody experiences moments of anxiety, but when does it become an issue? Of course there are diagnostic criteria in the DSM-V for anxiety disorders to help differentiate normal anxiety from anxiety disorders. Anxiety is a natural protective response in the mind and body, but it may become persistent, intense, or disruptive.

Symptoms of anxiety can include excessive worry, irritability, racing heart, muscle tension, insomnia, stomach upset, and many more. How anxiety presents varies greatly from person to person, as do the causes. It may manifest in any combination of physical, emotional, and mental symptoms.

When you feel that anxiety is getting in the way of your life, it’s time to reach out for help. Our California-licensed therapists use proven methods like CBT, which research shows to be an effective treatment for anxiety. We also have therapists who specialize in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, trauma therapy, couples therapy, and holistic therapy to fit your needs.

Types of Anxiety

Anxiety can arise in many different forms. Here at One Mind Therapy, we work with individuals struggling with anxiety in all of its shapes and sizes.

Generalized Anxiety

Generalized anxiety disorder, or GAD, is characterized by chronic worry about everyday situations. People with GAD often share feeling like the mind won’t shut off, and may find it difficult to pause and relax.

Health Anxiety

Health anxiety is anxiety specifically about illness, pain, and general health. People experiencing health anxiety may constantly check their health, find it difficult to stop thinking about health, and seek reassurance repeatedly.

Panic Disorder

Characterized by sudden and intense fear, panic attacks and panic disorders can cause strong physical symptoms and a powerful fear of future panic attacks.

Social Anxiety

Social anxiety can arise at work, with friends, or in public spaces. Individuals with social anxiety may fear judgement or embarrassment, and often struggle to be authentic around others.

Trauma

Trauma-related anxiety may result in a state of hypervigilance, general feelings of being unsafe, and activation of the nervous system. It often requires a form of trauma-informed therapy to help treat.

Relationships

Relationship anxiety may manifest as fear of abandonment, overthinking aspects of the relationship, or finding difficulty in building trust. It often gets in the way of an otherwise healthy relationship.

The Benefits of Online Therapy

Research suggests online therapy is generally just as effective as in-person therapy. More severe psychological cases may benefit from in-person sessions. For mild to moderate cases, the benefits of online therapy include:

  • Improved convenience - No commutes, waiting rooms, or managing childcare and other responsibilities,

  • Greater comfort - Sessions from home mean you can be in your safe space rather than a steril office,

  • Increased accessibility - Wherever you are in California, we can see you. You’re not limited to therapists in your immediate area

How Online Therapy Works

Online anxiety therapy works just in-person therapy! The first session may include a bit of history-taking, reviewing treatment goals and what brought you to therapy, and an opportunity for you to get to know your therapist. You will meet with your therapist on a regular schedule from the comfort of your own home or space. We ask that you find a relatively quiet, private space to offer your full attention in each session.
