Understanding Depression

Depression is a mood disorder that impacts every aspect of an individual. It affects mood, thinking, energy levels, motivation, physical health, relationships, and more. Depression is not just having a bad day or a tough week. It can be pervasive, get in the way of daily responsibilities, and make it difficult to function.

There is no one clear cause of depression. It generally arises due to a combination of various factors including genetics, brain chemistry, stress levels, adverse childhood experiences, current life situation, medical conditions, social support, and more. Whatever the cause of one’s depression, the good news is that it can be treated.

Types of Therapy for Depression

There are many types of therapy that can be effective in treating depression. Research suggests a few specific modalities may be most effective.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, focuses on identifying and changing thought patterns and behaviors that are contributing to depression. CBT is one of the most researched therapeutic modalities for depression, and is often the first-line treatment for working with depression.

Interpersonal Therapy

Interpersonal Therapy, or IPT, centers on improving relationships issues and social functioning that may be contributing the the symptoms of depression. It’s especially helpful when the depression is linked to grief, life transitions, and interpersonal conflicts.

MBCT

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy combines CBT with mindfulness practices. By clearly recognizing problematic thought patterns and behaviors, individuals learn to change their relationship with the difficulty.

The Benefits of Online Therapy

Research suggests online therapy is generally just as effective as in-person therapy. More severe psychological cases may benefit from in-person sessions. For mild to moderate cases, the benefits of online therapy include:

  • Improved convenience - No commutes, waiting rooms, or managing childcare and other responsibilities,

  • Greater comfort - Sessions from home mean you can be in your safe space rather than a steril office,

  • Increased accessibility - Wherever you are in California, we can see you. You’re not limited to therapists in your immediate area

How Online Therapy Works

Virtual depression therapy works just in-person therapy! The first session of online therapy may include a bit of history-taking, reviewing treatment goals and what brought you to therapy, and an opportunity for you to get to know your therapist. You will meet with your therapist on a regular schedule from the comfort of your own home or space. We ask that you find a relatively quiet, private space to offer your full attention in each session.
